How to make a great self tape as an actor
Here are my 5 simple tips on how to make a great self tape as an Actor.
I have cultivated these tips overtime throughout my studies in college at Toronto Film School to which I have graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Acting for Film, Television and Theatre.
As well as my past experiences from different seminars with multiple casting directors/agents in the industry.
Lights, Camera Action - Let’s get rolling.
Step 1 - Well-Lit Space:
• Ensure you have good lighting to highlight your facial expressions and body language. Natural light works best, so position yourself facing a window. If that's not possible, use soft, diffuse artificial lighting from multiple sources to avoid harsh shadows.

Step 2 - Clear Audio:
Invest in a decent microphone or use a smartphone with a good built-in microphone. Record in a quiet space to minimize background noise. Audition panels need to hear your dialogue clearly, so prioritize clear and crisp audio.

Step 3- Stable Camera Setup:
Use a tripod or a stable surface to keep your camera steady. Avoid handheld shots as they can be distracting. Ensure the camera is positioned at eye level to capture your performance effectively. Frame the shot from your chest up, allowing casting directors to see your facial expressions and body language.
This is one of my favorite tripods to use since it is multifunctional with the option to film on either an Iphone/Android or a DSLR Camera
Step 4 - Simple Background:
Choose a neutral and uncluttered background to avoid distractions. A solid-colored wall or a clean backdrop works well. The focus should be on you and your performance, so keep the setting simple and professional.
My favorite on the go compact backgrounds
Step 5 - Follow Instructions:
Pay close attention to the audition instructions provided. Follow any specific guidelines regarding framing, attire, and the slate. Adhering to these instructions demonstrates professionalism and makes it easier for casting directors to evaluate your audition.
Remember to rehearse your lines thoroughly and do multiple takes if necessary. Check the recording before submitting to ensure everything looks and sounds as intended.
Good luck with your auditions, you got this!
