My tips to a Successful Day on Set
Navigating the worlds of Commercial Dance & Film/Television
Lights, camera, action! Working on a Music Video, Commercial, Dance Production or Film set is an exhilarating experience, but it requires more than just technical know-how. Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting, here are some essential tips to ensure a successful day on set.
1) Preparation is the key to success
The number one rule on any set is to arrive early and stay late. Early arrival gives you time to acclimate, set up your surroundings, and mentally prepare for the day (i.e rehearsing choreography or reviewing lines/scenes with other cast mates). Staying late showcases your dedication and can be the key to forging connections with colleagues.
Remember if you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re late!
2) Be Adaptable: Navigating challenges and quick changes
In the world of Film & Dance, unexpected changes are completely normal. This could be anything stemming from choreography re-staging & script revisions, equipment malfunctions and sudden change in weather.
Always be ready to adapt.
Having a flexible mindset creates an opportunity for you to showcase your problem-solving skills and sets you apart as a reliable team player.
3) Effective Communication: Just like they always say, communication is key
Practice active listening, be open to feedback and express your thoughts clearly. Communication is the lifeline to everyone from the director, to the production assistant, choreographer, make-up & wardrobe department to the talent themselves.
Everyone plays a crucial role & appreciates great communication.
4) Stay Hydrated and Energized: Take Care of Yourself
While being on set can be very rewarding & fulfilling, the days can be extremely long not to mention physically and mentally demanding.
I would highly recommend to bring extra snacks (even though we love a good craft table) vitamins, a personal water bottle (with your name on it) and some activities like a good book to dig into during a break. Taking care of your physical well being not only enhances your performance (sometimes I like to squeeze in a quick stretching session) but also contributes to the overall positive atmosphere on set.
By incorporating these tips into your on-set routine, you'll not only excel in your role but also contribute to the overall success of the production.
Lights off, wrap up, and pat yourself on the back for a job well done!
P.S Remember, film is forever. Always put your best foot forward.
